Black and Decker CFV1200 DustBuster 12-Volt Cordless Vacuum

A versatile unit with cordless convenience, this Black and Decker DustBuster 3-in-1 vacuum is a handy tool around the house and workshop. The machine converts to three different configurations: a full-height floor vacuum, a handheld power brush vacuum, and a compact DustBuster. In each configuration, the vacuum collects dust and debris into a roomy dirt cup, filtering out the smaller particles. Suitable for carpets, hard floors, and upholstery, the 12-volt machine is easy to convert and use. Its connecter switches and power buttons are large and simple, and the 10-inch floor nozzle glides easily. Though not the equal of a full-size vacuum if you have a house full of carpet, the unit is great for kitchens, bathrooms, small hardwood areas, stairs, quick pick-ups, and dry spills. Plus, its cordless power means fast, convenient, unfettered cleaning. The unit comes with a rechargeable battery and a charging unit, as well as a hook for hanging it on the wall. Fully charged (16 hours), the unit runs between 14 and 17 minutes on average. One minor drawback to this model–in its fullest size, the vacuum does not stand up by itself. It is lightweight and maneuverable, however, so this does not present a big problem. In its floor vac shape, the unit stands 42-1/2 inches high. Black and Decker includes a 2-year warranty. –Emily Bedard

Black and Decker CFV1200 DustBuster 12-Volt Cordless Vacuum Reviews

Bad on pet hair, bad overall
I purchased this vacuum mainly to do spot clean-ups of pet hair from our two dogs. My biggest complaint on the performance is that the hair gets caught in the little wheels on the stick vac that the vacuum rolls on, and is near impossible to get out! I continued to try to use it regardless of this problem, and then it scratched my wood floor. Not sure if there was a rock stuck in the brush, or what. Last but not least, the charger stopped working. I waited too long to return it, and as I only paid about $40, I think I’ll just throw it away.

Nice Concept, Poorly Executed
For most “all-in-one” products, the total is not equal to the sum of its parts. What I mean is, this stick vac conceptually allows you to do multiple things with only one tool, but in fact, it’s mediocre for usage as a result of poor design. Suction-wise, it worked OK.

1. There is no wall charging mount (only a peg/hook to hang it), so you have to remove and reinsert the charging cord before and after use. This sounds trivial, but how nice and simple would it have been if Black & Decker offered the same wall charging mount they do for most cordless devices that allowed you to simply lift up, use, put back.

2. The DustBuster (shop vac) if used by itself doesn’t fit into its upright vac casing (removal from or placing back in) without wiggling into place and firmly locking in place, often accompanied by the sound of plastic parts wearing each other down. We all know that over time, plastic-on-plastic wears out, especially when you wince at the harsh vs. soft click sound.

3. Cleaning: the only way to clean/empty the filter after you’ve used the item as a full floor vacuum is to remove the DustBuster handheld unit from the upright casing. So, reference to the above points about plastic-on-plastic wear and tear and lack of a charging station mount that might hold it in place while you try to remove the filter, you have to (a) put this thing on a table or sink, stoop over it if it’s on the floor, then (b) pop the DustBuster out, then (c) pop off the cover, and then shake the filter clean. In short, it would have been nice if B&D engineered a way to allow easier dumping of dirt.

It has reasonably good suction for the DustBuster part, but as a stick-vac, it’s not impressive. I’d pay twice the money for a cordless stick vac with good suction made of more durable plastic.

Lastly, Amazon’s return policies have turned me off of buying anything from them that I’m not 100% sure of. They reduce your refund by any “free shipping” costs, and of course require you to pay for return shipping. Plus, they packed the unit’s original box in one *twice* its size filled with bubble plastic. Talk about waste, and possibly extra shipping costs for me to bear! Bad experience.

B&D CFV1200 DustBuster 12-Volt Cordless Vacuum
This vacuum is absolutely the best for a small home or apartment. It’s brush attachment removes the ground-in dirt from our room rugs and removes cat hair from our furniture and bed spread. WE LOVE IT!

Cordless Vacuum
After a very few minutes of the first use of the cordless vacuum it quit. I suspected the battery contacts might be insecure, adjusted them and operation resumed. This is a typical problem for Black & Decker cordless appliances, so I tried that first. The vacuum works well–picks up dog hair and other bits of debris. The battery pack often loses contact but wacking the case on the side reseats the connecion. Endurance of the charge is good, but emptying the dust cup requires removing the hand-held part from the floor unit to get to the cup–and the catch holding the hand-held unit in the floor unit is flaky. All in all, the vacuum is satisfactorily useful.

Great little powerhouse lightweight vacuum
So far, this little vacuum cleaner is a wiz at small jobs. It is flexible and I like the fact there is not bag to dump. I find the power to be amazing for a dustbuster type vacuum.
